Ethos

Läkarmissionen’s intention is to make it possible for marginalized people to gain improved quality of life. Our experience indicates that both individuals and circumstances can be changed, and that sustainable results can be achieved, as we include the people in need in the process of change. Our  conviction of equal rights for all people and our ambition to make it possible for marginalized people to develop their potential, especially children and young people, reflects our Christian and humanitarian values.

Basic info

Läkarmissionen is an independent Swedish foundation which supports development projects and humanitarian efforts in direct collaboration with local partners, other non-government organizations or different Christian organizations often related to Swedish churches and denominations. Our donors consist mainly of around 100.000 private Swedish individuals who respond regularly to our monthly direct mailing letters. We also receive government grant from Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) via another Swedish partner organisation (PMU InterLife) for a few of our projects. We support a variety of humanitarian aid and development projects in 33 countries (Aug 2005). Applications for financial assistance may be submitted three times per year (March 1, August 1 and October 15). Our donors are able follow the progress of our projects through our monthly letters and articles in Svenska Jourlalen and other media as our implementing partners report on a regular basis.

Focus of work

Our work is focused on five main areas:

  • Health (support to hospitals and clinics, HIV/Aids, etc.)
  • Education (literacy, non-formal education, support to pre- and primary schools, etc.)
  • Social Concern (support to children at risk, e.g street children),
  • Environment (agricultural, reforestation, clean drinking water, etc.)
  • Humanitarian Aid (emergency relief after natural disasters).

Partners

In previous years we have mainly supported projects run by church related organizations linked with different Swedish Churches. This has given us access to a unique and reliable network, and has reduced the administrative costs for the different projects. Since Swedish personnel working overseas has decreased considerably in the last decades, we have increasingly developed cooperation directly with local implementing partners in project countries and also with international non-government development organizations (NGOs).
